Stewardship Challenge Week 11: Personal Development & Leadership Part 4

Stewardship Challenge-2016

Leadership-Part 4

“Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God” Joshua 14:9
  • J.W. McLean and William Weitzel in their book, Leadership: Magic, Myth or Method, define leadership as:
    • person
    • Involved in a process
    • Of influencing and developing a group of people
    • In order to accomplish a purpose
    • By means of supernatural power.

Fourth, there are always purposes for leadership. The purposes can be stated or implied. When I lead my children to faith or in spiritual growth, the purposes unfold according to the needs and seasons of their lives. When I lead a ministry team, then I must also clearly state the purposes from the outset. Understanding and unpackaging the purposes of a group require astute insight that stems from research, mission definition, goals, plans, implementation, monitoring, and evaluating our effectiveness. In addition to group purposes, we also forge out individual purposes that are defined by relationship and need.

We’ve learned that, as godly leaders, our purpose in life needs to be directed toward God and his kingdom. Does that mean we sit idly by and wait for Christ’s return? No. The apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:9 that we need to please God both in this life and the next: “So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.”
Leadership must include Passion! Enthusiasm! Leaders must have a clearly defined purpose that transcends merely getting a job done.

What is your purpose for being? If you have not developed a purpose statement for your life, ask God to guide you in the process of creating one that fits with your passion and gifts. A biblical purpose is an unchanging reason for being. Your purpose statement must include something of the transcendent. Don’t settle for a purpose that only includes excellence in the temporal arena. This is something that will animate you whether you’re young or old, single or married, have children or not. This is not something that ends in retirement or changes according to circumstances or season of life. Then you can be sure you’re embracing the things that are worth embracing.

Passion and clear purpose served Caleb well for his many years. And these two qualities are still an essential part of great leadership. For Caleb, that purpose and its consequent passion were transcendent. They were greater than any product of promotion or profit. He found a life-consuming passion: “I followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.” No higher purpose and no greater passion exist. This purpose gives maximum meaning to whatever a leader does.

Volunteer Help for the Summer

4/15/2016

Due to the approach of summer and CBC students graduating or heading home, Crossroads desperately needs people to fill in the gaps during those months. We need volunteers for Sunday Sermons, Bible study leaders, and musicians for Sunday services. Please consider offering your time and making a difference in an elderly person’s life.

Please feel free to forward this to someone who has a heart for ministry and the elderly. We’re holding a training class on May 21st so any new volunteers will be able to get properly trained by Kay.

Stewardship Challenge – Week Thirteen – Leadership Part 3

Stewardship Challenge-2016
 Leadership-Part 3
“I can do nothing on my own initiative.  As I hear, I judge; and my judgement is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of Him who sent me.”

John 5:30

J.W. McLean and William Weitzel in their book, Leadership: Magic, Myth or Method, define leadership as:

  • person
  • Involved in a process
  • Of influencing and developing a group of people
  • In order to accomplish a purpose
  • By means of supernatural power.

“What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever though could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love Him” 1 Co 2:9 GNB

As we demonstrate Christian leadership we should be ready to grab hold of our future!  Christian leadership is more than a mere position or appointment. You might ask, what is the difference between Christian leadership and Christian management?   I will use the analogy of sheep and shepherds. The bible analogies of shepherds depict the shepherd walking in front of the sheep following. This is Christian Leadership. In the western world the shepherd would keep the sheep together and drive them toward their destination.  This is Management.  Christian leadership is about activating vision!!!  Christian leadership comes into play when you are the first to see a need, have a vision for addressing the need, make a decision to do something about it and finally, act upon it. What the Christian community needs is Christian leaders that can receive a vision from God and bring it to fulfillment.

There is no leadership without a group of people to influence and develop; the size of the group is immaterial.  Unless the leader takes the time to invest in the people, there will be no true leadership. Leadership is a gift that is earned over time given out of the love by the people they serve. Christian leadership is not about recognition, it is about action!
I would like to close with this prayer….

The following prayer was first prayed by General Douglas McArthur for his son.
The words are adapted so that you can
 pray it for yourself.

“Build me, Oh Lord, to be strong enough to know when I am weak, and brave enough to face myself when I am afraid; let me be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

“Build me to be a person whose wishes will not take the places of deeds; let me know Thee . . . and help me realize that to know myself is the foundation stone of knowledge.”

“Build me to be a person whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a person who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.”

“And after all these things are mine, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that I may always be serious, yet never take myself too seriously.”

“Give me humility so that I may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom and the meekness of true strength. Then I, will dare to whisper, I have not lived in vain.”

Amen

Stewardship Challenge Week Thirteen – Leadership Part 2

Leadership-Part 2
“I can do nothing on my own initiative.  As I hear, I judge; and my judgement is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of Him who sent me.”
John 5:30
J.W. McLean and William Weitzel in their book, Leadership: Magic, Myth or Method, define leadership as:

  • person
  • Involved in a process
  • Of influencing and developing a group of people
  • In order to accomplish a purpose
  • By means of supernatural power.

This week we will look at Leadership as it is involved in a process. Leadership is involved in a process of growth and development.  Leadership is distinct from management. We manage things, we lead people. Learning to lead people sometimes takes a lifetime in developing the process. Some are born with the gift of leadership but still need to learn to walk in love with those they serve; many times that is in itself a process.  We learn through the good times as well as the hard times.

When we know that we are “called” by God to be a leader in the Body of Christ, then we know that God’s anointing will be sufficient for success. Being a “Leader” is not confined to a church or a ministry.  The Lord needs Leaders in every area of life. The Lord is calling man and women who are competent in their call from the Lord.  From Proverbs 22:29, we find a compelling argument for competence as a leader. “Do you see a man skilled in his work?  He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men.”

Stewardship Challenge Week Twelve: Leadership – Part 1

Stewardship Challenge-2016

Leadership-Part 1

For the month of April, we will be looking at Leadership from a Biblical point of view. What is Christian leadership? What should a Christian leader be like? There is no finer example for Christian leadership than our Lord Jesus Christ. He declared, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). It is within this verse that we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. He is one who acts as a shepherd to those “sheep” in his care.
Jesus personified leadership. He directed thinking, guided people, aimed them toward truth, and showed the way to love, forgiveness, and eternal life. The best place to start in defining leadership is with Jesus.

  • J.W. McLean and William Weitzel in their book, Leadership: Magic, Myth or Method, define leadership as:
     person
     Involved in a process
 Of influencing and developing a group of people
 In order to accomplish a purpose
 By means of supernatural power.

Leadership always begins with a person. You can see Christ at work in the above definition. Someone has said, “A leader is a person with a magnet in his heart and a compass in his head.” It is imperatives that we respond affirmatively to God’s call. The more leaders understand themselves, the better off the group and the mission being served.

We will look at each of these things above as well as other characteristics of a Christian Leader.
