Stewardship Challenge-2016

Leadership-Part 1

For the month of April, we will be looking at Leadership from a Biblical point of view. What is Christian leadership? What should a Christian leader be like? There is no finer example for Christian leadership than our Lord Jesus Christ. He declared, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). It is within this verse that we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. He is one who acts as a shepherd to those “sheep” in his care.
Jesus personified leadership. He directed thinking, guided people, aimed them toward truth, and showed the way to love, forgiveness, and eternal life. The best place to start in defining leadership is with Jesus.

  • J.W. McLean and William Weitzel in their book, Leadership: Magic, Myth or Method, define leadership as:
     person
     Involved in a process
 Of influencing and developing a group of people
 In order to accomplish a purpose
 By means of supernatural power.

Leadership always begins with a person. You can see Christ at work in the above definition. Someone has said, “A leader is a person with a magnet in his heart and a compass in his head.” It is imperatives that we respond affirmatively to God’s call. The more leaders understand themselves, the better off the group and the mission being served.

We will look at each of these things above as well as other characteristics of a Christian Leader.
